SCULLING SKILLS

The sculling skills program runs in the September holidays, usually the first week of the school holidays.

The first part of the week will involve new scullers learning to use their oars and balance their boat whilst on a rope, whilst later in the week students will have a chance to row around whilst under coaches supervision. The rowers will also have a chance to learn to use ergometers (ergos) and learn more about rowing boats and techniques.

Senior rowers are also invited to assist in the mentoring of younger students. From experience, sculling skills is the boat shed's best method for forming bonds between the older and younger rowers, which often form long lasting friendships between crews. The older students often have past sculling skill experience, and remember back to when they first learnt to row.

Junior rowers are advised to wear comfortable, tight clothing (leggings, shorts, t-shirt, jumper), and be prepared for all weather. It can be cold whilst sitting in a scull on the water, and therefore warm clothing is a good idea.

It is also sensible to bring a change of clothes and a towel, as every year a number of rowers fall out of their boats. Too avoid sickness and hypothermia, the students would be best advised to use the upstairs facilities and shower/get changed if they happen to fall in.

More information will be made available closer to the date.
